Budget PCs: Mail-order computers can be cheap - but a low price may not mean good value

Article Abstract:

Five mail-order computers for 1,000 pounds sterling or less were assessed for value for money. Before purchasing by mail order it is important to read the advert carefully, as the small print may indicate that a computer with a better specification can be purchased, but this can wipe out most of the savings that can be obtained. The Dan Xplora priced at 940 pounds sterling has little memory and only a 14 inch monitor, although it does come with a modem. The Tiny Home Study System was good value at 1,010 pounds sterling, but the Time Colossus 200M was not good value for money at 975 pounds sterling, with just 14 inch monitor and no video card.

Budget changes

Article Abstract:

Certain measures announced in the 1992 Budget have already been introduced, such as a reduction in car tax on new cars to 5%, an increase in Vehicle Excise Duty to 110 pounds sterling and an increase in the threshold for Inheritance Tax. Other measures were not part of the initial Finance Act, and will be introduced over the rest of the year. Budget measures have been beneficial for car buyers, and the increase in Income Support will assist pensioners on a low income, but the new lower tax band will not have an effect on Mortgage Interest Tax Relief at Source (MIRAS).

Article Abstract:

Increased personal allowances were among the benefits of the latest budget to taxpayers, along with the lifting of the lower-rate tax band to 24,300 pounds. Beer, wine, spirits, cigarettes, petrol, diesel, and road tax have all been put up, while fortified and sparkling wines are to come down slightly. Additional help for the long-term unemployment to return to employment has been launched, along with VAT exemption on lease cars.
