Counter advice: Consumers are still not receiving the right advice when buying medicines from pharmacies

Article Abstract:

Pharmacies doe not always given the information and advice needed by customers to ensure that appropriate drugs are supplied. Many medicines that were previously only available on prescription are now available over the counter under the pharmacist's supervision, and these are categorized as pharmacy (P) medicines. Research found that the right advice was more likely to come from the pharmacist than their assistants. However the right questions may not always be asked when purchasing medicines from a pharmacy, and it is important to speak to the pharmacist in person.

Soothing sweets

Article Abstract:

There are a number of kinds of over-the-counter sore throat remedies available in the UK. Medicated sweets can temporarily ease a sore throat because they contain syrup ingredients, but they are no more effective than any other boiled sweet. Remedies containing an anaesthetic ingredient will numb nerve endings, but again will only have a temporary effect. Remedies containing an antiseptic may be effective, but stronger antiseptics could actually have a negative impact, as they cannot kill only 'bad' bacteria.

Cold comfort

Article Abstract:

The UK market for cold and flu remedies has reached a value of around 106 million pounds sterling a year. Many remedies aim to tackle a range of symptoms, so they may contain a cough suppressant, a painkiller or a decongestant. Cough remedies are either suppressants, expectorants or demulcents. Traditional cold and flu remedies include lemon and honey, garlic, zinc, chicken soup and echinacea.
