Genetically-modified foods

Article Abstract:

Recent research has revealed that supermarkets are unable to guarantee that products which contain genetically-modified (GM) ingredients are labelled, so that shoppers can make an informed choice. The survey questioned 60 supermarkets regarding their labelling of products which contained GM strains of soya and maize. None of the supermarkets was able to make this guarantee because the GM products are combined with standard products in the US before they reach the UK. Genetic modification is useful for producing herbicide-resistant crops but it may also increase the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. The supermarkets' attitudes towards labelling are given.
