Thirteen new telephones and twenty two answering machines are evaluated, with five ordinary phones, five cordless phones and six answering machines considered best buys. For basic telephones, key features to look for include the position of the keys, programmability and loudspeaker capabilities. Useful features for answering machines include logging date and time, and two-way recording.
