Memory issues

Article Abstract:

All portable computers are equipped with non-permanent menory (used to run programs) and permanent memory for storage of data and applications packages. The non-permanent memory, or Random Access Memory, is measured in bytes, with most notebook computers equipped with at least 4 MB of RAM. Permanent memory is in the form of either hard or floppy disks, with portable computers generally having a minimum of 120 MB of hard disk space. Removeable hard disks are advisable if security of data is a concern. Hard disk performance can be improved by either using data compression software or a hard disk caching controller.

Why portables?

Article Abstract:

The portable computer is a central requirement in today's flexible work environments. They allow users to work from home if necessary, give immediate access to information when not in the office and can also save valuable and expensive office space. Portables are suitable for all industries and are popularly used for field-force automation. Hot-desking, a form of flexible working in which employees sit at any free desk to finish a task, is also a popular use for portable computers. The three main categories of portables are A4 notebooks, sub-notebooks and power portables.

Buying and running

Article Abstract:

There are several different ways of buying portable computers: through direct sales, by mail order, computer superstores and via dealers. Those without specialist computer knowledge are better off buying from an established dealer who can offer advice and support, but those who are computer-literate may prefer to buy from a retail outlet or via mail order. Those requiring short-term usage of a portable computer could try the rental option, which has the advantage of a back-up service.
