A European Court of Justice ruling on the European Trade Marks Directive has made parallel imports illegal. Brand owners are strongly opposed to parallel trading, and take many steps to prevent parallel imports. They present a number of justifications for retaining their control over prices. These include the fact that consumers only benefit by being sold certain items in the appropriate environment and the fact that only official traders can offer high levels of sales advice and service.

Digital cameras are quite new and models are being quickly replaced by less expensive ones with higher specifications. Digital cameras do not use film and the image is electronically captured in the internal memory. Pictures can be downloaded onto a computer and can be altered. 10 digital cameras were compared and only the Agfa ePhoto 1280 could produce pictures close to the quality of those from 35mm cameras, although its costs 700 pounds sterling.

The features of digital cameras are explained, and 12 digital cameras are evaluated. The best overall performer is the Nikon Coolpix 880, followed by the Casio QV-3000Ex/lr and the Sony DSC-S70.
