Personal word processors

Article Abstract:

Personal word processors weigh less than the screen-based systems and are priced between 200 pounds sterling and around 500 pounds sterling. A best buy at the low end of the market is the Sharp Fontwriter FW-550, priced at 250 pounds sterling. The machine uses thermal transfer printing and has a small, high quality LCD of five lines. Running costs are reasonable and the machine is fairly quiet. Features include a 80,000 word dictionary and 30K of RAM. Other personal word processors are evaluated.

Article Abstract:

Most screen-based word processors launched since February 1994 have integral printers, with some having disk drives. Prices range from 300 pounds sterling to 1,400 pounds sterling. A best buy at the low end of the market is the Smith Corona PWP5000 Plus, priced at 300 pounds sterling. Features include daisy-wheel printing, 128K memory and a 90,000 word dictionary. Its main drawback is the printout speed. Other screen-based word processors are evaluated.

Amstrad PLC's PcW16 word processor is priced at just 130 pounds sterling and is an extremely competitive product. The screen-based system does not have an integral printer, but still represents good value. The Triumph-Adler Gabrielle TopType is a well-styled product and is reasonably priced at 98 pounds sterling, The machine is quiet and easy to use.
