The UK fax market is continuing to develop, with more models having extra functionality and prices falling. While the price of equipment is an important point when deciding which model to purchase, other factors should be taken into consideration, such as the volume of information to be sent or received and the length of the documents. Low-end thermal fax prices start at some 200 pounds sterling, but plain paper models are more expensive. The advantages and disadvantages of plain paper faxes are discussed.

Purchasing facsimile equipment is being made more difficult by the increasing number of options, such as Internet faxing and PC faxing. When examining a multifunctional fax it is important that the specification of each function is checked to ensure it meets requirements. The three main types of multifunction faxes are SOHO machines, Laser/LED devices and flatbed platen devices. Other facsimile technologies are discussed.

Plain paper faxes are worth considering for those seeking fax machines with multifunctional capabilities, such as linking up to a PC. The advantages and disadvantages of plain paper faxes are presented in further detail.
