Purchase considerations

Article Abstract:

Private medical insurance (PMI) will cover the cost of treating curable, short-term medical conditions under specialist care. There may be exclusions and restrictions such as long-term or geriatric care. Methods to exclude pre-existing conditions have been criticized by the OFT, but a moratorium clause means a medical examination is not normally required. The alternative is to have a medically underwritten policy, which involves informing an insurer of past conditions. Insurers have speeded up claims processing with some offering fast-track claims systems.

An overview of the market is provided, along with the pros and cons of setting up a private health scheme for employees.

In sickness and in health

Article Abstract:

Private health insurance is viewed as an important benefit by employers, and employees, particularly in small companies. Alternatives to PMI include permanent health insurance (PHI) and critical illness insurance (CII). The health insurance industry has been criticized and and OFT report called for each health insurance policy to be accompanied by a clear summary of what is and is not covered.
