Prices charged for spares can vary greatly between franchised car dealers and independent parts retailers, so it is often worthwhile seeking out the best bargains. Failing to fit manufacturers' parts will not completely invalidate a warranty, contrary to what many people believe, and it is possible to make considerable savings by avoiding franchised dealers.

The price of car spares prices tend to be higher from franchised, rather than independent retailers, however, the products sold in many cases are identical. Franchised retailers provide more comprehensive services such as extended warranties. The EC is now drafting a design rights proposal, which will restrict the motorist's choice and which may even lift prices as a result of reduced competition.
