An electronic `key' in the browser and the merchant's software prevents others from opening and using them. The merchant must have an electronic `firewall' so that online thieves cannot take the numbers once they reach the merchant. Shoppers should look for an unbroken key on a dark blue background or closed padlock in the bottom corner of the browser.
