Specs inspection: whatever frames you're fixed on, shop around for glasses. Otherwise, you risk paying over the odds for a pair of specs

Article Abstract:

Almost 1.3 billion pounds sterling was spent on spectacles in the UK in 1996, but shopping for spectacles can be expensive and confusing. Boots Opticians, Specsavers, Vision Express and Dollond & Aitchison, represent more than a third of all sales. Eight researchers visited 10 different opticians and found large price variations. A pair of ordinary single vision spectacles with plastic lenses cost between 47.50 pounds sterling and 112.95. There were also price variations in varifocal lenses, and photochromatic lenses were priced between 69 pounds sterling and 130 pounds sterling. The national chains did not always offer the best prices and it was not always easy to get a clear quote. Details on going for an eye test and shopping around for spectacles are provided.

Shopping around

Article Abstract:
