Article Abstract:

There are three main spreadsheet packages available for microcomputers. They are Lotus 1-2-3, Microsoft Excel and Novell Quattro Pro. Lotus 1-2-3 release 5.0 is a powerful spreadsheet package with several useful functions, including the ability to create a graphic of a map and a workgroup spreadsheet capability. Microsoft Excel 7.0 is part of the Office '95 suite although it is also available as stand-alone package. New features include AutoCorrect which corrects misspellings of words. Novell Quattro Plus has always been a powerful spreadsheet package, but is only keeping pace with its rivals rather than outdistancing them.

Three of the most popular spreadsheet software packages are evaluated: Corel Quattro Pro 8; Lotus 1-2-3 97 and Microsoft Excel 97. Corel Quattro Pro 8 is a powerful, user friendly and flexible product. It contains a WYSIWYG auditing facility for tracing and a Cell Reference Checker for formulae. Lotus 1-2-3 costs 233 pounds sterling and is losing market share to Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel 97 is a full-functional package with excellent facilities and costs 277 pounds sterling.

Three spreadsheet packages are evaluated: Microsoft Excel 97, Corel Quattro Pro and Lotus 1-2-3 97. Corel Quattro Pro has an extensive supply of powerful functionality but is not straightforward to operate. It requires a minimum 16 megabytes of random access memory and 50 megabytes of hard disk space. Corel Quattro Pro can not be bought separately. Spreadsheet package Microsoft Excel 97 costs 256 pounds sterling.
