Supreme superminis: the fierce competition in the supermini class has brought about many improvements to small cars

Six petrol superminis were tested for performance and general ratings including steering and handling, comfort, ride and secondary safety. They are the Citroen Saxo, Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Toyota Starlet, and Volkswagen (VW) Polo. The best buy was the VW Polo, although it was the most expensive at 9,910 pounds sterling. Others worth considering in the best buy guide were the Ford Fiesta which performed reasonably well in most areas, and the Seat Ibiza. The Toyota Starlet had disappointing handling and was not recommended.

A survey to evaluate mini car's on the basis of their price, handling, suspensions, brakes, visibility, and overall score was conducted. The results showed Honda's Jazz as the best buy at Pound 8,795 and score of 66%, followed by Skoda's Fabia at Pound 7,570 and 65%, Renault's Clio at Pound 9,145 and 62% and lastly Smart's ForFour at Pound 7,290 and 47%.
