Buying and selling a home

Article Abstract:

Buying or selling a house is a major financial transaction and it can be traumatic. A survey found general satisfaction with estate agents although estate agents did not compare favourably with other professionals involved, such as mortgage lenders, solicitors and surveyors. Most agents operate ona no sale-no fee basis, and they are paid commission from the sale of the property, the percentage of which varies between one and four per cent. The majority of complaints about estate agents relate to maladministration, followed by commission or fees. New methods of buying and selling include electronic sales via the internet, chain-breaking schemes and insurance cover to compensate if either side withdraws from the deal. It is important to choose and estate agent, solicitor, or surveyor that is registered with a relevant trade body.

The cost of moving home

Article Abstract:

Most people buying and selling houses in England and Wales use an estate agent, although a survey of 5,000 readers reveals that many of them are unhappy about the service they received. The cheapest selling option is the sole agency agreement. If a speedy sale is required, the best choice is multiple agency. Advice on estate agents, surveys and legal costs is discussed.
