The final cut

Article Abstract:

Utility companies have different approaches when dealing with customers who are in debt to them. British Gas cut the supply off from 14,000 customers in 1995 and British Telecom disconnected more than 500,000 people in 1996. Utility companies should contact customers before their supply is cut off, offer different ways of paying, keep extra charges as low as possible, and use forced entry only as a last resort. Utility regulators should respond to incidences of bad practice.
