Overall, the wines scored fairly highly but the richer styles from warm climates such as South Africa, Spain, Southern France and Chile were praised for their food-matching abilities with South African white wine scoring top ranking complementing the lighter dishes well and in the richer-food category red, Marks & Spencer Old Vines Grenache Noir scored highest with cheapest rate.

Dessert wines and mince pies

Article Abstract:

A group of wine experts tasted 26 dessert wines and around half of the wines achieved respectable scores. The top wine was Seppelt Rutherglen Show Muscat at 7.93 pounds sterling from Oddbins, followed by Lindemans Coonawarra Botrytis Riesling 1996 at 5.99 pounds sterling. A range of standard and luxury style mince pies were tested to determine the best value. 11 out of 14 pies received poor marks, and the luxury pies were not rate better than standard ones. The top marks for taste were given to pies made by a home economist, using a recipe from Delia Smith's Winter Collection.
