The millenium issue

Article Abstract:

A report from the Gartner group suggests that the year 2000 date change will affect 90% of computer applications, which will fail at the end of 1999. Large amounts of existing code will have to be rewritten to ensure that computers can cope with the problem, which is estimated to cost UK industry some 31 billion pounds sterling. Users of financial and accounting software packages should be aware that they must upgrade their systems if they are to escape disaster.

In 1997, small- to medium-sized businesses bought 1.4 million desktop PCs, with an investment of 700 million pounds sterling forecast in the run up to the year 2000. Developments in the desktop industry include increased use of multimedia technology in business applications, and the planned release of two new operating systems, namely Windows 98 and Windows NT. Evaluations of 29 desktops are included.
