Festive reasons

Article Abstract:

The German Bundesgartenschau (BGS) or Federal Garden Festivals were launched in order to encourage regeneration of cities during the post-war era. The horticultural event places equal importance to the gardens and displays alike and shows are currently booked until the year 2003. Karlsuhe is to hold the event in the year 2001 and it has prioritised the upgrading and restructuring of current parks and 'ecological urban renewal'. The aims of the BGS are discussed further.

The quiet killer

Article Abstract:

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents estimates that 240 deaths per year are the result of carbon monoxide poisoning. The First Alert FACO gas detector is recommended in an evaluation of six gas detectors, it costs 40 pounds sterling and is battery-powered. Also recommended is the SF Detection SF310 detector, which costs 60 pounds. Tips are given on how to make your home safer.

'Animal Farm' at 50

Article Abstract:

Orwell had trouble finding a publisher willing to market a veiled criticism of our allies, the Soviet Union. The novel endures not just because of its Cold War theme, but also due to its characterization of human nature. The 50th anniversary edition drawings by Ralph Steadman do not do the work justice.
