Which washing machine?

Article Abstract:

Front-loading washing machines are the most popular but top-loaders and washer-driers are also described. Tests on 16 models show their reliability and compare program choice, cost, energy use, noise, servicing and safety. Spinning efficiency cannot be judged by high spin speed. The AEG OLO 610 Electronic is a good front loader. The top-loader Zanussi TJ1043 is recommended. The best washer-drier is the Zanussi WDJ1285/A. 'Green' claims confuse purchasers as they do not always compare like with like.

Washing Machines

Article Abstract:

A comparison of washing machines found that the AEG 675 Sensortronic offered the best all round performance, but was costly at 650 pounds sterling. Other good buys included the Bendix Stream Line, the Servis Compact and the Zanussi washer dryer. Features which may be important when purchasing a washing machine include pre-set programmes, pre-wash facilities, reduced temperatures and economy programmes. Washer-drier prices, washing results and running costs are also examined.

Washer-driers

Article Abstract:

While the size of washer-driers has been reduced, there are still design problems which mean shortcomings, such as their inability to dry a full wash load. They may also leave clothes more creased than do driers which are separate. Their method of drying also uses more water than a conventional drying system, since they are cooled by cold water coming from the household supply. The shortcomings of washer-driers are the result of their being a compromise in terms of design.
