Active folding of Pleistocene unconformities on the edge of the Australian-Pacific plate boundary zone, offshore North Canterbury, New Zealand

Article Abstract:

The marine seismic reflection data and Quaternary stratigraphic study outline the seismic potential of actively growing folds that overlie a system of blind thrusts, offshore North Canterbury, New Zealand. Eleven sedimentary units of Pleistocene to Recent age have low fold amplitude growth rates. The blind thrust faults have slip rates of the order of 0.1-0.9 mm/year. The coseismic uplift, occurring during thrust fault earthquakes of moderately large magnitude, causes fold growth. Probable recurrence intervals of large magnitude thrust earthquakes are of the order of tens of thousands of years.

Strain partitioning in the transition area between oblique subduction and continental collision, Hikurangi margin, New Zealand

Article Abstract:

A complex pattern of strain partitioning was discovered in the area between oblique continental collision in northern South Island and the oblique subduction under southern North Island in New Zealand. This can be observed from the deformation rates and the spatial differences in late Quaternary structural style. Sediment samples, seismic reflection profiles, sonar swath images and backscatter images were used for the study.
