Active slivering of oceanic crust along the Molucca ridge (Indonesia-Philippine): Implication for ophiolite incorporation in a subduction wedge?

Article Abstract:

The narrow basin of the Molucca Sea is located south of Mindanao (Philippines). Geological and gravity data was compared with bathymetry, seismic and ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) data from the northern part of the ridge, to resolve the issue of the origin of the broken Molucca Sea crust versus outer ridge of the Sangihe subduction zone, or ultramafic ridge. It is concluded that the central structure of the Molucca Sea highlights several stages of oceanic crust deformation. The Molucca Sea subduction under the Sangihe arc was first perturbated after the rupture of the Molucca Sea lithosphere.

The onset of movement on the Philippine fault in eastern Mindanao: a transition from a collision to a strike-slip environment

Article Abstract:

Narrow Philippine Fault deformation in southeast Mindanao was differentiated from collision-related structures. East-west transects taken from south to north revealed the structural evolution of eastern Mindanao to a pure strike slip environment from a zone of active collision. The Philippine Fault was also found to reactivate pre-existing collisional features in traversing the southern Pacific Cordillera.
