Bacteria-protist interactions and organic matter degradation under P-limited conditions: analysis of an enclosure experiment using a simple model

Article Abstract:

Results of an enclosure experiment in a Norwegian fjord suggest that bacterial production may be regulated by the phosphorus-limited bacterial growth rate combined with predatory control of bacterial biomass. The enclosures exhibited a pattern of succession in which an initial autotrophic phase was followed by a heterotrophic phase. Net community production was positive during the autotrophic phase, while the heterotrophic phase featured lowered rates of primary production and negative net community production, along with increased respiration, bacterial production and biomass.

Annual average abundance of heterotrophic bacteria and Synechococcus in surface ocean waters

Article Abstract:

The relationship between annual average temperature and abundance of marine bacteria is discussed, with a focus on heterotrophic bacteria and Synechococcus, a photosynthetic cyanobacterium. Average nitrate concentrations are also examined.
