Chemical cues: why basic peptides are signal molecules in marine environments

Article Abstract:

Signal persistence is suggested as a reason that basic peptides have been selected as chemical cues in marine environments. Glycyl-glycyl-L-arginine (GGR) has been used to examine peptide uptake rates and mechanisms in a natural assemblage of marine bacteria. Results include seawater analyses, total amino acid concentrations, bacterial uptake of organic substrates, abiotic partitioning of 14C label in controls and uptake kinetics.

Diversity in planktonic communities: an experimental test of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis

Article Abstract:

Diversity in planktonic communities, investigated in an experimental test of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis in a lake in Germany in summer, is discussed. Diversity showed a definite maximum at the intermediate disturbance interval of 6 days, and the species number was highest at intermediate interval length. Different disturbance intensities were the result of differences in the experimental mixing depth.
