Commerce Department establishes Natural Disaster Reduction Initiative

Article Abstract:

The National Disaster Reduction Initiative (NDRI) is an interagency effort to reduce the impact and risks of natural disasters. It defines natural disasters as severe weather conditions, extreme biological events and geophysical activity that threaten the lives, livelihoods and economies of affected areas in the US. It emphasizes on redeveloping the emergency response environment, building resilience at the local level and engaging in international partnerships.

Article Abstract:

The owner of five wheel barrows describes each one as if it possessed a personality of its own. The oldest wheelbarrow belonged to his father and played a central role in the author's boyhood chores. The favorite is made of wood with removable sides. It takes its place behind the shed, waiting, its owner says, for the phone to ring.

The tax-reform obsession: if conservatives really want to get serious about free markets, they should forget about taxes and look at something truly important, like traffic

Article Abstract:

The tax system and traffic congestion are compared as systems that encourage people to act in ways that are economically inefficient. A rebate system for people who car pool would be more efficient than the present expensive grid-locks. But traffic jams continue and so does the current tax system.
