Continental collision, gravity spreading, and kinematics of Aegea and Anatolia

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the tectonic processes responsible for the westward motion of the Anatolian-Aegean plate are considered. It is suggested that both the Arabia-Eurasia continental collision and the extension at the boundary between the European plate and the Mediterranean are required to produce the lateral extrusion of Anatolia.

Displacements, strains, and rotations within the Afar depression (Djibouti) from restoration in map view

Article Abstract:

A study established the compatibility of the displacement, strain and rotation fields computed from the restoration in map view with G.D. Acton, S. Stein and J.F. Engeln's 1991 microplates model. Results were also compatible with the crank arm model developed by B. Sichler in 1980 and T. Souriot and J.P. Brun in 1992. Such compatibility was observed only if the Danakil block's axis of rotation is situated to the north of the Afar depression. The microplate model describes the deformation in terms of relative block movements within the deformed region, while the crank arm model relates the deformation within the Afar triangle to boundary displacement and rotation.
