Distribution and tectonic setting of Ordovician K-bentonites in the United Kingdom

Article Abstract:

Trace element composition was used as a basis to compare K-bentonites distributed in the UK and to provide evidence of their varied origins. K-bentonites result from the chemical alteration of air-borne volcanic ash after deposition in marine sediments. Samples from Llanvirn to Ashgill from both sides of the Iapetus suture were analysed. The analysis shows the K-bentonites from the Llanvirn/Llandeilo came from subduction-related volcanism while those from Caradoc/Ashgill were related to marginal basin extensional volcanism.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of Mesozoic black shales and interbedded carbonates, southern Sicily: evaluation of diagenetic processes

Article Abstract:

A geochemical and mineralogic study of shale-carbonate sequences in the oil fields of southeastern Sicily was presented. The results were analysed in the light of its relation to the diagenesis of the sequences. Included in the study were two Upper Triassic/Lower Jurassic formations including black shales. The first one exhibited source rock properties and the other has the properties of a reservoir rock. Divergence in the diagenetic histories of the two formations was concluded based from the results of the study.
