E. Wendell Hewson: 1910-1997

Article Abstract:

Meteorologist E Wendell Hewson died on Dec 25, 1997 after years of devoting himself to the concept of applied meteorology. He graduated with honors from Mount Allison University which was followed by two MA's from the Dalhousie University and from the University of Toronto. He applied meteorological concepts to an vast array of problems, many of which involved pollution. Many of his articles were published in the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology where meteorological terms were explained to allow users a better understanding of the subject.

Allan H. Murphy: 1931-1997

Article Abstract:

Allan H. Murphy has contributed greatly to atmospheric sciences with his devotion to the verification and evaluation of weather forecasts, probability weather forecasting and decision theory. Murphy specialized in problems in meteorology that received no attention from anyone in the climate community. He was also a tireless and systematic organizer of conferences, symposia and workshops. Murphy passed away on Aug 5, 1997 at his home in Corvallis, OR.

Gerald Charles Gill: 1911-1993

Article Abstract:

American Meteorological Society Fellow and atmospheric science professor Gerald Charles Gill died on Nov. 3, 1993, in Ann Arbor, MI. Gill participated in the development of meteorological instruments such as the UVW anemometer, anemometer bivane and the Gill Low Pressure Hydrogen Generator. Gill, who was born and raised in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, graduated from the University of Western Ontario with degrees in physics and mathematics.
