El Nino, ice cover, and Great Lakes phosphorus: implications for climate warming

Article Abstract:

Evidence from a 19-year study of Lake Huron outflow suggests that global warming may have a significant effect on water quality in the Great Lakes. Winter air temperature variations associated with strong El Nino years were correlated with the highest phosphorus concentrations in the Lake Huron outflow. Phosphorus concentrations were negatively correlated with the amount of winter ice cover. Small variations in winter air temperatures appear to have significant impact on the extent of ice cover in the Great Lakes.

Increased recruitment of northeast Pacific barnacles during the 1997 El Nino

Article Abstract:

Recruitment of barnacles was significantly higher in May to September, 1997, just after the onset of El Nino conditions off the coast of California, than the same time period the previous year. The increase was geographically broad and unusually large, relative to differences in barnacle recruitment previously documented in this area.

Prediction of annual and seasonal phosphorus concentrations in stratified and polymictic lakes

Article Abstract:

A model is presented for predicting annual and seasonal phosphorus concentrations in stratified and polymictic lakes. Topics include observed P averages; prediction of annual whole lake P, mixed water column P during the fall, and epilimnetic summer P; and error estimates.
