Experimental determination of activities in FeTiO3-MnTiO3 ilmenite solid solution by redox reversals

Article Abstract:

Analysis of synthesized Fe-Mn ilmenite by electron microprobe (EMP) shows that a synthesis duration of greater than or about 100 hours produces homogenous ilmenite. Run durations of 2-5 days with intermediate grindings are sufficient to produce 100% ilmenite of good crystallinity. Shorter run durations can produce additional traces of rutile and MnO. The ilmenite shows ideal stoichiometry with (Fe-Mn) = Ti = 1, when normalized to 3 oxygens.

Geochemical reversals within the lower 100 m of the Palisades sill, New Jersey

Article Abstract:

Petrographic and geochemical data obtained from Palisades sill at Fort Lee, New Jersey, indicate that olivine zone (OZ) may have formed due to initial emplacement of a heterogenous initial magma. The magma originated from a compositionally stratified, sub-Palisades storage chamber situated inside the upper crust. Heterogenity came into existence either directly from the mantle or during quick ascent.

Complex zoning between super-calcic pigeonite and augite from the Graveyard Point sill, Oregon: a record of the interplay between bulk and interstitial liquid fractionation

Article Abstract:

An analysis of minerals from the Snake River Plain region in Oregon indicates that olivine assists in the transformation of augite to super-calcic pigeonite. The authors compare the fractional crystallization processes of bulk liquid and interstitial melt, and discuss the two processes' influence on mineral texture and chemistry.
