Plate motions in the North Pacific: the 43 Ma nonevent

Article Abstract:

A study of tectonic characteristics shows that a major plate motion change occurred at 43 Ma in the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain in North Pacific and is unique to this region. There is no such 43 Ma event anywhere in the world and this is seen from hotspot calculations. The chain could have been created by motion of the Pacific plate over a hotspot, embedded in a mantle frame at 43 Ma. An analysis of plate circuit calculations for different regions is given.

Distribution of displacement on and evolution of a young transform fault system: The northern San Andreas fault system, California

Article Abstract:

A working model for spatial and temporal distribution of dextral slip on the northern San Andreas fault system is presented. It is based mainly on field relations in the San Francisco Bay area and provides insights into the evolution of a young transform fault system. The model assigns negligible slip to the Pilarcitos fault.
