Speech input control for networked virtual environments
Article Abstract:
Progress in the application of speech recognition technology to virtual reality (VR) has been limited apart from well-funded research projects. It was seen as an important goal in the planning of the Virtuosi project supported by the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and EPSRC. GEC-Marconi Research Centre, Signal Processing, Control & Networks Division GMRC(B) was a major contributor, and it successfully integrated an entire speech recognition sub-system with a virtual reality workstation available commercially, although further improvements could be made, to the vocabulary and the menus.

Dinner-party politics
Article Abstract:
It is always an ethical challenge when facing a decision to attend a dinner with guests' whose morality is offensive. To decline is to create a certain degree of social isolation. It is equally challenging to decide whether or not to divulge to children an opinion about Jesus Christ that reflects a lack of belief in his influence or even his existence.
