Gross and net nitrogen uptake and DON release in the euphotic zone of Monterey Bay, California
Article Abstract:
A study in Monterey Bay, CA, has indicated that a dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) pool functions as an intermediate between DIN assimilation and the net formation of particles for export, which will then affect carbon flow in the bay. The net and gross nitrogen uptake and DON release have been studied using 15N tracer techniques to measure rates of ammonium ion and nitrate uptake in the euphotic zone of the bay.

Predicted impacts of elevated temperature on the magnitude of the winter-spring phytoplankton bloom in temperate coastal waters: a mesocosm study
Article Abstract:
The impact of temperature on the trophic structure of nutrient-rich coastal systems was studied on 6 land-based mesocosms in Dec, 1996, to Feb, 1997. Warmer temperatures were expected to result in lower phytoplankton biomass during the period as a result of increased grazing linked to greater metabolic activity of zooplankton and the benthos.
