Interactive effects of flow speed and particle concentration on growth rates of an active suspension feeder

Article Abstract:

Particle concentration and flow speed and their interactive effects on growth rates of an active suspension feeder, Parasmittina jeffreysi, an encrusting, cheilostome bryozoan in the Gulf of Maine, are discussed. Growth was apparently limited by competition for space in the natural community and interactive effects of flow speed and particle concentration are acting on growth rates with opposite effects, so no regional differences, net, are seen, though at one of the coastal sites growth of unobstructed colonies less than that at any of the other three sites, perhaps from high sedimentation and very low flow. Two sites were coastal and two were offshore.

Diurnal signals in vertical motions on the Hebridean Shelf

Article Abstract:

Measurements of backscatter signal intensity and vertical velocity made with an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) on the Hebridean Continental Shelf are discussed and interpreted. Topics include evidence of diel vertical migration, weakening of the migration signal midway through the time series, and possible advection of the migrating zooplankton away from the ADCP.
