Lack of evidence for enhanced preservation of sedimentary organic matter in the oxygen minimum of the Gulf of California: comment and reply

Article Abstract:

The validity of a study of the laminated and homogeneous sediments of the Gulf of California using the Rock-Eval pyrolysis technique is questioned. The conclusion derived from the study negates the hypothesis that anoxic conditions enhance the accumulation of hydrogen-rich organic matter. This is in contrast to another study using the Rock-Eval pyrolysis technique which asserts that anoxia can, in some instances, promote the preservation of hydrogen-rich organic matter. Proponents of the previous study offer proof to support their hypothesis.

Tertiary volcanic rocks and the potassium content of Gulf Coast shales-the smoking gun: comment and reply

Article Abstract:

The high potassium (K) content of shales derived from the Gulf Coast of Mexico and Texas may be accounted for various provenance changes among volcanic rocks. Geochemical and geochronoligical data show that the area is marked by increased depositional K sources, thereby increasing the possibility of a diagenesis. This assumption, however, is refutable since it is based merely on a two-component mixing model, which is insufficient in gathering adequate evidences for a provenance change within the Wilcox formation.

Article Abstract:

The results of recent studies on carbon preservation in marine shales contrasts with other geological and geochemical studies on the said topics. This seeming difference in results is suggested to be due to the fact the studies are concentrated on the two-endmembers of the early diagenetic processing of organic matter. The Reply contends that the difference actually lies in the interpretation of the depositional environment of organic and hydrogen-rich sediments in the geological record.
