Late orogenic extension of the Betic Cordillera and the Alboran Domain: a lithospheric view

Article Abstract:

A clear example of a collisional orogen which has gone through large-scale extensional collapse, while the convergent movement of the bounding plates continued, is provided by the Betic Cordillera of southern spain. The extension was adjusted by coeval shortening in thin-skinned fold and thrust belts around the periphery of the system. These phenomena can be explained by the convective removal of the lithospheric root under a Paleogene collisional orogen, which leads to large-scale extension followed by the thermal subsidence of the system's center.

Thermal evolution, rate of exhumation, and tectonic significance of metamorphic rocks from the floor of the Alboran extensional basin, western Mediterranean

Article Abstract:

The main cause for the formation of the Alboran Sea basin in the western Mediterranean seems to have been some type of lithospheric delamination, according to radiometric data on the timing of the thermal history and the results of numerical modeling designed to test the various theories for the formation of the basin. The results of this research could be consistent with convection as the mechanism of removal of mantle lithosphere if the Moho temperature is sufficiently high and if a wet olivine rheology is suitable for the subcontinental mantle.

Comment on "Alternating contractional and extensional events in the Alpujarride nappes of the Alboran Domain (Betics, Gibraltar Arc)" by Juan C. Balanya et al

Article Abstract:

Authors Juan C. Balanya, V. Garcia-Duenas, J.M. Azanon and M. Sanchez-Gomez suggest that the definitive attribute for the classification of the Alpujarride thrust sheets is the pressure of metamorphism achieved during an early contractual event. They suggest, among other proposals, that specific pressure temperature conditions characterized each thrust sheet during this event. However, there are problems with the evidence on which their hypothesis is based. These issues are discussed.
