PGE in solid solution in base metal sulfides and the down-temperature equilibration history of Merensky ores

Article Abstract:

Platinum-group elements (PGE) in the base metal sulfides of the Merensky reef of Southern Africa are present in significant ore proportions only in the pentlandite phase. The sulfides are most oversaturated in platinum ores and are oversaturated by a factor of two in palladium ores. Ru and Rh, respectively, lie above and below the saturation levels of sulfides. These findings indicate that ore assemblies must have equilibrated under the maximum stability temperatures of pyrite and pentlandite. Temperature conditions during ore formation and its significance are discussed.

Magnetic metasomatism and formation of the Merensky reef, Bushveld Complex

Article Abstract:

A study shows that minerals, such as clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene, from Merensky reef, Bushveld Complex, contain very large and varying concentrations of rare earth elements. These concentrations are compared to those in the rocks several meters below the reef. Using the metasomatic process, decoupling of incompatible trace and major elements can be explained. The metasomatic process, which occurred during crystallization of Bushveld Complex, caused petrogenesis of the reef.

Petrogenesis of the Dullstroom Formation, Bushveld Magmatic Province, South Africa

Article Abstract:

An analysis of volcanic sediments of the Precambrian Dullstroom Formation indicate that magmatism caused the creation of the Busvheld Magmatic Province in South Africa. The authors discuss the area's possible petrogenetic processes during the magmatic period, and analyze its sedimentary composition.
