Policy statement: Tornado preparedness and safety

Article Abstract:

This article discusses risk of death or injury from tornadoes and some recommendations for averting those risks as adopted by the American Meteorological Society Council on February 28, 2000. Among several things considered, education, planning, awareness, timely application of basic safety rules, and choosing proper shelter are considered critical to reduce risks.

Hurricane research and forecasting

Article Abstract:

A description is presented of policies adopted by the American Meteorological Society for performing hurricane research and enhancing prediction abilities. The policies, which also apply to typhoons and cyclones, emphasize greater utilization of data sources, including synthetic data in the absence of remotely sensed or in situ observations.

Prediction and mitigation of flash floods

Article Abstract:

A description is presented of the policies adopted by the American Meteorological Society concerning flood forecasting and control. An emphasis is placed on preparedness programs, diagnostic/predictive models and electronic data communication systems.
