Quaternary convergent margin tectonics of Costa Rica, segmentation of the Cocos Plate, and Central American volcanism

Article Abstract:

Control of Quaternary convergent margin tectonics by the subducting lower plate along Costa Rica is discussed. The extent to which subducting ocean crust affects the upper plate is possibly unusual off Costa Rica.

Tectonic structure of the convergent Pacific margin offshore Costa Rica from multichannel seismic reflection data

Article Abstract:

The Middle America Trench between the Cocos Ridge, Costa Rica, and a corridor off the Nicoya Peninsula is composed of a margin wedge which is covered by slope sediment, overthrust by trench sediment, and fronted by an accretionary prism. The trench probably has a non-steady state Tertiary tectonic history. The shelf's basement is composed of ophiolite, and its acoustic velocity and structure are similar to that of the wedge. The high velocities of the margin wedge indicate the formation of a rock body and slope sedimentation, which subsequently underwent modification at the surface.

Tectonic control of the subducting Juan Fernandez Ridge on the Andean margin near Valparaiso, Chile

Article Abstract:

Upper plate tectonics related to the subduction of the Juan Fernandez Ridge were studied in a two-degree sector offshore Valparaiso. The ridge uplifts the upper plate and sediments of the Valparaiso Basin were deformed against the southern flank, which is consistent with a southward migration. Nazca Plate relief influences tectonism of the margin subducted beneath thin continental crust.
