Remobilisation of the continental lithosphere by a mantle plume: major-, trace-element, and Sr-, Nd-, and Pb-isotope evidence from picritic and tholeiitic lavas of the Noril'sk District, Siberian Trap, Russia

Article Abstract:

Drill core (core SG-9) and surface exposure help in sampling the Late Permian to Early Triassic Siberian Traps. The isotope and trace element features of the Mesozoic high- and low-Ti flood basalts associated with the break-up of Gondwanaland are shown by the flood basalts of the Siberian Traps at Noril'sk. Sr-, Nd- and Pb-isotope data and new major and trace element data from the two sequences of stratigraphically controlled lavas are presented. The Noril'sk lavas are different from the main Siberian Trap sequence.

Ages, rare-earth element enrichment, and petrogenesis of tholeiitic and alkalic basalts from Kahoolawe Island, Hawaii

Article Abstract:

The petrographic, petrologic, geochemical and K-Ar analyses of the volcanics at Kahoolawe Island, Hawaii show that the basaltic shield volcano is made up of intercalated tholeiitic and alkalic basalts which have undergone stratification through fractional crystallization. Kahoolawe lavas in the potshield stage exhibit compositional variations, high rare earth element levels and yttrium levels. In addition, the shield volcano features rejuvenated-stage basaltic assemblages from tholeiitic, shield-like magma.

Experimental constraints on the low-pressure evolution of transitional and mildly alkalic basalts: multisaturated liquids and coexisting augites

Article Abstract:

The melting relations of tholeiitic, transitional and mildly alkalic basalts and ferrobasalts are analyzed, with emphasis on the constraints of liquid-augite relations on the liquid lines of descent. Results show that coexisting augites show a variation from nepheline to hypersthene normative compositions under pseudo-quaternary projections. Therefore, the normative tetrahedron approximates pseudo-quaternary systems for basalt petrogenesis and evolution.
