Stress field fluctuations along the Dead Sea rift since the middle Miocene

Article Abstract:

The ages of basaltic rocks and normal E-W faults in the Dead Sea rift indicate that the Dead Sea stress field (DSS) and the Syrian Arc stress field (SAS) structures developed simultaneously from the middle Miocene to the present. The presence of both DSS and SAS structures is due to the activity of a constant SAS field and a fluctuating DSS field. The fluctuations in DSS are due to the superposition of stress drops and movement along the Dead Sea transform. The WNW shortening and NNE extension are responsible for the SAS, and the NNW shortening and ENE extension for the DSS.

Comment on 'Stress field fluctuations along the Dead Sea rift since the middle Miocene' by Yehuda Eyal

Article Abstract:

Eyal's findings that most middle Miocene to Recent SH max and Sh min data from the Sinai-Israel subplate cluster in two distinct orientations, are based on examinations of mesostructures and macrostructures. The determination of the paleostress pattern needs to be based on careful weighting of available data, and Eyal's observation could be more broadly entertained.

Article Abstract:

Bahat's critique relates to Eyal and Reches 1983 and Eyal 1996, and addresses missing relevant information on stress trends and calculation problems in plotting data. The assumptions made for data acquisition and processing of Eyal and Reches 1983 and Eyal 1996 are reestablished and justified, with consequent results and conclusions.
