Supracrustal intraplate thickening of Variscan basement due to Alpine foreland compression: results from the superdeep well KTB (Bohemian Massif, Germany)

Article Abstract:

A kinematic/geometric model for the late- to post-Variscan period at the western border of the Bohemian massif was discussed. The faults and mineralized tension gashes studied revealed the deformation stages, namely, Upper Carboniferous subvertical tension gashes, Upper Carboniferous reverse faults, Cretaceous subhorizontal tension gashes and reverse faults and Neogene normal faults. The Franconian Lineament was also found to play an important role in the lithosphere's strength and in the interplate compression strain localization.

Variscan extension in the Pyrenees

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze Variscan extension in the Pyrenees. The analysis is integrated with geological and geochronological data for Variscan extensional geometry and kinematics at a crustal level. Results show that such an extension was generated by gravitational potential energy of lithosphere further enhanced by an unstable lithospheri root. These forces caused progressive uplift, tectonic denudation and a thermal structure of the Variscan crust.

Structure of the Castillo granite, Southwest Spain: Variscan deformation of a late Cadomian pluton

Article Abstract:

The structure of the late Cadomian Castillo pluton in SW Iberia was investigated, with a focus on its internal structure and the structural geology of its country rocks. The granite was partly gneissified in the late Paleozoic and tilted, allowing the study of different depth levels. The structures relating to magma emplacement could be separated from those forming in tectonic reactivation.
