The adaptation of Pearce element ratio diagrams to complex high silica systems

Article Abstract:

Pearce element ratio (PER) diagrams can interpret different complex silica systems besides qualitative analysis of mineral phase fractionation. Zirconium (Zr), which is the compositional abundance denominator, provides the process with accurate analysis and wider range of silica levels due to its insolubilityin aqueous fluids and incompatibility in silicic systems reaching 68% by weightof silicon dioxide. However, samples containing more than 25% of hornblende andilmenite limit the use of Zr because PER diagram results are difficult to analyze.

The source of Central American lavas: inferences from geochemical inverse modeling

Article Abstract:

Geochemical analysis of the rare earth element (REE) composition of the Central American volcanic front was conducted in order to study the nature of the source of basaltic magmas. REE values were calculated for different segments of the volcanic arc through inverse modeling and compared with the actual values. The study showed that the source areas for Guatemala and central Costa Rica were characterized by moderate-to-strong light REE and high modal garnet compositions; the opposite was true for the Nicaraguan source region.

A predictive model for rare earth element partitioning between clinopyroxene and anhydrous silicate melt

Article Abstract:

A quantitative model describing the partitioning of rare earth elements (REE) between clinopyroxene and anhydrous silicate melt is presented, based on the Brice equation. Both homovalent and heterovalent substitution were considered, to maintain a general approach. Experimental work should now concentrate on the details of melt-compositional effects, which were lost by the simple melt model in the scatter of partition coefficient data.
