The meta-igneous granulite xenoliths from Kerguelen Archipelago: evidence of a continent nucleation in an oceanic setting

Article Abstract:

The petrology of peridotitic, pyroxenitic and gabbroic meta-igneous xenoliths from Kerguelen Archipelago was examined. Petrologic data from the xenoliths were used to analyze the deep lithosphere beneath the Kerguelen plateau and to provide constraints for interpreting geophysical data. Experimental results showed that the formation of oceanic basic granulites from Kerguelen may be attributed to the interaction between the South East Indian Ridge and the Kerguelen plume and the long activity of the plume allowing high-temperature conditions in the lower parts of the lithosphere.

Experimental determination of pargasite stability relations in the presence of orthopyroxene

Article Abstract:

The mechanism behind pargasite stability relations is investigated. Results show that the addition of orthopyroxene effectively reduces the stability field of pargasite by approximately 200 degrees Celsius at one kb. Further calculations on the various behavioral aspects of pargasite are carried out, and the results indicate that pargasitic amphibole can form from a hydrous silicate melt at depths as shallow as eight to ten km.
