Yucca Mountain: Earth science issues at a geologic repository for high-level nuclear waste

Article Abstract:

The important geosciences issues associated with the project and place them in the context of the process by which a final decision on Yucca Mountain is reviewed. Geoscientists in this project are challenged to make unprecedented predictions about coupled thermal hydrologic, mechanical, and agrochemical processes governing the future behavior of the repository and to conduct research in a regulatory and legal environment that requires a quantitative analysis of repository performance.

Genes, diversity, and geologic process on the Pacific coast

Article Abstract:

The genetics of marine diversification along the West Coast of North America in relation of the Late Neogene geology and climate of the region are examined. Less deeply divergent patterns in genetic structure are often attributable to range expansion associated with warning, deglaciation and sea level rise at the end of the Pleistocene.

Isotopes: From Earth to the solar system

Article Abstract:

Isotopic thermometry in extraterrestrial material and measurements of isotopic equilibrium fractination factors for materials of geological interest are described. Two alternative mechanism are proposed for generation of an [super 16]O-rich and [super 16]O-poor reservoir from an initially homogeneous nebula.
