A depressed labor market as explained by participants

Article Abstract:

An unconventional survey of labor market participants during the 1990-1993 recession showed that employers' belief in the necessity of job motivators other than employee selfishness is a primary cause of downward wage rigidity. Most employers avoid setting pay cuts or layoffs for both old employees and new hirees to avoid loss of morale. Employers generally avoided hiring workers who earned higher wages in previous jobs to avoid discontent and potential early job withdrawal.

Recent perspectives on African-Americans in post-industrial labor markets

Article Abstract:

A review of recent studies on employment problems of African-Americans highlighted three issues. Additional studies on specific sectors and geographic areas are needed. More improved ideas of discrimination and race along with advanced designs of education, employment and training programs are also needed. Additional research on such programs will stir anew the Mead-Wilson argument on factors affecting the labor-market problems of African-Americans.
