A dynamic model of union power, wages and employment

Article Abstract:

Standard models used to assess the effect of labor unions on employment can be misleading, while a dynamic model, using a demand curve for labor, and measuring the effect of using strike-breakers, can give different results. A rise in the percentage of employees following a call to stop work could increase employment levels, and might cuot wage rates, a finding at variance with traditional models. However, empirical evidence is needed in order to back the theoretical presentation in this model.

The effect of wages on investment and employment in a vintage model with uncertain demand

Article Abstract:

The effect of a wage increase on employment and investment during situations of demand uncertainty is examined. Findings show that demand and supply variables affect the direction of the effect. Higher wages lead to increased investment when wages are originally low and to decreased investment when wages are already set to a high level. Higher wages lead to increased employment in some states but not in others, thus, the relationship between the two variables is ambiguous.

Fiscal institutions and wage bargaining in the local public sector

Article Abstract:

Fiscal institutions' structure affects the outcome of wage bargaining in the local public sector. Under an initial centralized financing system, possibility exists that decentralization of wage bargaining may result in wage improvement in the local public sector. A theoretical framework developed reveals that decentralization of finance needs to be undertaken when wage bargaining is decentralized to prevent wage pressure.
