Aiming high: competitive benchmarking for superior performance

Article Abstract:

The continuous measurement of products, services andpractices and its comparison to the standards of industry leaders is known as benchmarking. Strategic bench marking, operational benchmarking and management benchmarking are the three basic types of this mechanism. This process involvesfunction identification, selection of superiors, collection and analysis of data, identification of performance goals and implementation of plans and the monitoring of its results. The leader in high technology copying machines, Xerox, is an example of the successful application of benchmarking.

Strategic control at the CEO level

Article Abstract:

A survey of 108 CEOs revealed the lack of strategic control measures in their management strategies. While the respondents valued control as necessary to management success, they nevertheless felt that feedback mechanisms were not as essential as planning and implementation. All the elements of strategic control should be given equal emphasis to obtain the best results from the process of strategic management.
