Annual bonuses, employment and productivity change in Taiwan's manufacturing sector

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese manufacturing companies have usually given annual bonus payments to employees during the Lunar New Year holiday. The relationship between compensation variability, and the variability and growth rate of employment was studied using industry data. Findings indicated a connection between employment and seasonally predictable compensation variability, suggesting that industries in which companies are willing to give regular new year bonuses have more stable employees.

X-efficiency in emerging competitive markets: the case of U.S. telecommunications

Article Abstract:

The X-inefficiency levels of firms in the telecommunications industry following the breakup of AT&T are examined. The method adopted defines firm performance based on an efficiency standard with all firms having equal access to technology. Telecommunications companies exhibited improved capacity to optimize outputs and cost control from 1973 to 1987. Thus, X-inefficiencies for firms have changed in terms of value augmentation and input conservation.

Firm size and productivity differential: theory and evidence from a panel of US firms

A new study uses firm level panel data to estimate production technology features for small and large firms in order to calculate the productivity differential between them.
