Appropriate indicators of demand for labour markets segmented by gender

Article Abstract:

Indicators of demand for labor need to take gender segmentation into account. This is shown by a study of long-term unemployed in the UK, in a context where part-time work for women has become increasingly available. Registered rates of female unemployment may not be the best indicator of demand. Labor market indicators should be appropriate to the particular segment of the labor force being studied, whether it is women or another segment. Gender is a key issue in the UK, and race may be as important in the US.

Gender and working time: an analysis of employers' working-time policies

Article Abstract:

Working-time policies determine the flexibility of labor hours, payment systems and workers' salaries. The gender factor in working-time systems was studied in 29 British firms. The study centered on the preferences of men and women workers for standard and non-standard working-hours and the rules, requirements and costs of different working-hours. It was concluded that working-time preferences are not independent of gender and that demand is increasing for non-standard working-time arrangements.

Policies for the development of knowledge-intensive local production systems

Article Abstract:

Local production systems have developed in a number of areas in Italy between 1970 and 1989. Companies have been set up by former employees of existing firms. There has been a move toward a generalised hierarchisation. Local institutions have helped shape local production systems, as has knowledge accumulation and mobilisation. Local policies can help in the development and creation of knowledgeto help improve production methods and other aspects of local production.
